Able Ride Scheme

» Home
Able Ride is a scheme which is run by the MTA separately to the Long Island Bus Service for those whose disabilities prevent them from being able to ride the fixed bus route. Able Ride provides a shared, curb-to-curb service for those assessed as being eligible. It is important to note that assessment takes into account only severity of disability and does not take account of age or the distance that the individual lives from a bus stop.

Able Ride Operating Hours

The Able Ride Service is available during the hours of 7am to 11pm on Monday to Friday, from 8am to 9pm on Saturdays and 9am to 6.30pm on Sundays. During these hours, the Able Ride service operates on a countywide basis, but it is also available on a limited basis outside of these hours by prior arrangement.

How to Apply to the Able Ride Scheme

If you think that you are eligible for participation in the Able Ride scheme, you need to contact Able Ride on 516-228-4000 to be sent an application pack. This must then be completed with the assistance of a qualified healthcare professional. The application form will ask for details relating to your disability, as well as asking for more information on when the Able Ride service may be required. If your application is then approved, you will receive an identification card and will be provided with information on how to book Able Ride services.
