The MTA MetroCard offers a quick and convenient method for paying transportation fares on New York transport, without the need to carry cash. The MetroCard contains a pre-paid balance which can be used on Long Island buses, the Staten Island railway, MTA buses, Westchester Bee Line buses, the Roosevelt Island tram and the JFK AirTrain. MetroCards can be purchased from vending machines located around MTA bus and rail stations; from ticket booths in Subway stations; onboard MTA buses; and from kiosks and other neighborhood merchants.
To use the MetroCard, simply swipe when passing through the Subway turnstile or dip into the farebox on MTA buses. Either of these two machines will also let you know exactly how much is left on your MetroCard so that you can see at a glance when it needs to be refilled.
Saving on Travel
Using a MetroCard regularly also lets you save on your travel with MTA services. Each time you top up the card with $8 or more, an additional 15% is also added to the card, which amounts to the same as making a 15% saving on travel.
Refilling your MetroCard
You will be able to refill your MetroCard at any MetroCard vending machine, which can be found in most MTA rail and bus stations. It is also possible to purchase an EasyPayXpress MetroCard which refills automatically each time the balance falls below $20.
