The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) operates a reduced fare scheme for those who are over the age of 65 years and those with disabilities which are eligible for the scheme. To be eligible, applicants must be able to produce one of the following:
- Card from the NYC Department of Aging
- Medicare card
- Access-a-ride card
- MTA Reduced Fare card issued prior to 1995
Eligible persons will be issued with a Reduced-Fare MetrpCard on acceptance of their application. This then allows eligible users to ride the Long Island Bus system or Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) for half the usual fare. The MetroCard is also valid on the New York City Subway, local buses and MTA buses.
