There are several points which passengers on the Long Island Bus services should consider during their journey to ensure that their safety and security on board is protected.
Stand or Sit in the Appropriate Place
When you first board the bus and look for a seat, please ensure that children are seated first. Always ensure that you hold onto handrails and holds when walking around a bus, even if it is stationary, as it could pull off at any moment.
If there is nowhere left to sit, please ensure you stand as far back up the bus as possible to allow room for others. Also, always stand behind the line at the front of the bus, as this prevents distraction to the driver and also ensures you are at less risk of falling from the vehicle.
It is also clearly important that you never try to alight from a moving bus, and that hands, arms and legs are always kept inside the vehicle.
Request-A-Stop
The MTA appreciate that travelling late at night may be a nerve-racking experience for some, but there are several measures put in place by the Long Island Bus service which may help passengers to travel safely. All Long Island Bus services
The recently introduced 'request-a-stop' service allows passengers to alight from the bus at any place of their choosing along the route. The service runs seven days a week, between the hours of 10pm and 5am. To use the service, all you need to do is to tell the bus operator where you would like it to stop in advance of it coming up, and the bus driver will be happy to oblige.
